HotelTonight – Abilene, KS Hotels Just for You

I'd bet that a lot of people who have driven down Interstate 70 in Kansas remember it only as a big, flat road that is surrounded by a lot of corn and farms. While that's technically accurate, there are a lot of things happening and that have happened in the communities that dot the landscape along this interstate. The cities between Kansas City and Denver are extremely interesting, and every one of them that I've been to offers something unique. I would know this, because I always try to carve out some time to stop in these places – as I've done in other parts of the country – to get a good sense of what life is like there. To me, that's the best way to get to know a place, its people and the local culture. I was recently driving through Kansas on Interstate 70, and I was running well ahead of schedule – by almost a day, to be exact. I decided to use that time for myself by stopping in a city called Abilene. I wasn't worried about lodging, as my HotelTonight app would find me an Abilene, KS hotel room, as soon as I needed one.

The History

I knew before I pulled into town that the name of the city rang a bell for some reason. I also knew it wasn't because there is an Abilene, Texas, which I had also seen in the past. The Texas version of Abilene is almost 550 miles away. No, what Abilene is famous for is that it's the hometown of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, or Ike as he was called by many during his time. It's one of the remarkable things about our country – a town of fewer than 7,000 people can produce a war hero and president.

The Library

As is the custom with American presidents, there is a Presidential Library here in Abilene. It may seem an unlikely place for something like this, but there it was, right near the center of town. I had to go see it and am glad I did. The complex is not only home to the library and a lot of different Ike-focused exhibits, but his boyhood home is also there. I toured all of it and could not believe how interesting it was to see all of this up-close. I was also surprised to see so many locals out doing the same thing that day.

The Dining

I wanted a local experience for dinner, and a lady working at the library told me about a place that was known for its home cooking. That sounded perfect. The place looks like an old house, and the decor is far from fancy, but the service was excellent and they delivered on the food. I had fried chicken, macaroni and cheese and peas, and everything was divine. The chicken was juicy and crispy, the mac and cheese was creamy and the peas were also tasty.

HotelTonight – Abilene, KS Hotels Are Available

I was tired, full and ready to get some sleep. I opened my HotelTonight app and booked an Abilene, KS hotel room instantly. I couldn't wait to tell people about my experience that day, but first I needed a good night of rest.
